Since St. Patrick’s Day in 2017, Irish road bowling has become a springtime tradition in the town of Historic Rugby, with regular matches taking place throughout the season.

The sport, which is a combination of bowling and golf, involves participants throwing a 28-ounce cannonball known as a “bullet” around a course of country roads. The team that completes the course in the fewest throws wins.

Matches are held in Rugby every few Saturdays, and anyone in the village on the day of a match is invited to participate.

This year’s season kicks off on March 21 with Irish road bowling (weather permitting) and Hike Rugby, a special guided hiking event.
