About 60 miles northeast of Memphis in Brownsville, author and artist Billy Tripp is the creator behind The Mindfield, the largest outdoor sculpture in Tennessee. Tripp, who has lived in Brownsville since 1963, began the sculpture in 1989 and plans to continue adding to it throughout the rest of his life. Made of salvaged metal, the sculpture is about an acre in size and stands at 125 feet tall at its highest point.

According to Tripp, the work represents his emotions and personal growth. In addition to the network of steel, The Mindfield includes many individual pieces that represent significant events and periods of Tripp’s life. Among them is a water tower from a defunct factory in Kentucky, which Tripp transported to Brownsville and reconstructed as a memorial to his parents and a testament to the importance of tolerance in our communities and government.

The Mindfield has become a road trip attraction for many Tennesseans and visitors passing through the state. You’ll find the impressive sculpture at 8 S. Monroe Ave. in Brownsville. To learn more, visit sites.google.com/site/billytripp.
