Designing Woman: Chattanooga Artist Ivene Webb’s Wearable Art

Ivene Webb's Wearable Art

You might say Chattanooga resident Ivene Webb wears her art on her sleeve. Webb has been a painter for four decades, but she isn’t your typical oil-on-canvas artist. She got her start doing oil paintings back in 1971, but today Webb is best known for her “wearable art,” which includes ladies’ shirts and bib overalls.

“I paint with fabric dyes. They look much like oil paintings, but they are softer and they wash well,” Webb says. “I do a lot of farm and country scenes, like cows in a pasture or a little tractor in a field. I also like to paint bridges, houses and lots of flowers. Today I’m doing irises on shirts.”

How Ivene Webb Got Her Start in Art

Before devoting herself to creating wearable art, Webb spent 27 years working as an inspector at Chattanooga’s DuPont plant. Her coworkers nicknamed her Cricket, and she signs her painted shirts by that name.

“I started at DuPont when I was 18, and they said I hopped around like a Cricket,” Webb says with a laugh. “Now they could call me Turtle.”

While working at DuPont, the plant manager commissioned Webb to paint an old barn that was on the property before DuPont. And the rest, as they say, is history.

“That’s how people began to realize I was an artist,” she says. “I hung my oil paintings at DuPont, and people bought them. Then I retired early and started painting on clothes.”

Soon Webb was teaching classes so other people could learn to paint on clothes, and she built up quite an inventory of clothing.

“I started selling the clothes at art shows in the Nashville area and later at the National Cornbread Festival,” Webb says. “My bib overalls used to sell like crazy – I would paint on one leg and the bib and something coming out of the back pocket. Now I mostly sell the shirts.”

Webb still paints 12 to 15 oil paintings each year, many of which are commissioned. “I’ve done snow scenes and made them into Christmas cards,” she says. “I stay busy. I’m not a TV person, and I don’t even have a computer. But my next goal is to make a website.”

Nativity Sets

Webb also creates nativity figurines of Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus and the wise men.

“I make them with Styrofoam cones, porcelain heads and little clothes,” she says. “Then I dip them in starch, let them dry, paint them and sell them at shows.”

The complete set of nativity figurines sells for $300 and is popular with churches. Webb’s oil paintings range from $150 to $500, and her painted shirts sell for around $55 plus tax. It’s not uncommon for customers to visit her at shows wearing shirts they purchased several years earlier.

“They stay bright and don’t fade, especially if you wash them in Dreft detergent like baby clothes,” Webb says. “I’ll have people wear them five years later and tell me it still looks great.”

Loved your article. The shirts look absolutely beautiful. I too love to paint on different things. Never have tried cloth. My dad died in 1979 and in 2003, I lost my mom. Right before my mom passed away, my husband was taking down an old chimney from the home place. After mom died, I took a bunch of the old bricks, which were probably 100 years old or more (mom was 94), home with me. The thing that I am most proud of is the paintings I did on the bricks and gave to my four sisters, nieces, nehews andmy children. I still have not painted myself one but have one brick set aside.

I am the director of Farm Day in Anderson County, and I would love to have one of Ivene’s shirts. The XL would be about two sizes too large for me, but maybe I could use it as a jacket. What I would love to have is a shirt with a cotton boll on it. Maybe I need to get one commissioned like that!

At a time when people are confused, anxious, and looking for something hopeful and comforting, a wearable art shirt is just the ticket. It provides distraction from problems and adds a touch of hope for those who wear, and see, them…a reminder of a simpler life! There are so many items out there that seem to be a real representation of artful skill, but, in truth, don’t offer real artwork. I would be proud to wear one of Ivene’s products.

I used to embroider on denim shirts and reading this article brought back memories of those shirts I used to wear. I also love flowers, but birds run a close second. Your paintings are beautiful!

I dabble a little in wood painting. Not very good, but I like it. I once painted my mother’s home that she was, borned and grew up in, on a church pew, which included the old barn. You do a great job. The painting on page 19 reminds me of a Thomas Kincaid scene. It amazes me at the many different scenes that God puts in our path daily to enjoy. And sad to say so many times we miss some because we don’t realize the importance that might be behind it, the history and the people that are connected with the scene. I carry a camera with me all the time, just to capture the history, cause it may not be there the next time we pass by. Praying God will keep blessing you and your art.

I know what a great artist Cricket is because I paint with her. I have some of her shirts, and everytime I wear them I am asked where I got them. She puts a lot of detail work into her paintings. Everything she paints is beautiful.

Recently I discovered Ivene Webb as I read an article about her in Tennessee Home & Farm magazine (Fall 2011). What an extremely talented artist! She brings the beauty of every-day life in the country to life for all to appreciate in paintings as well as clothing. I think her talent is right up there with Thomas Kincaid. Ivene, keep up the good work!

From what I have seen of Webbs work she is very talented and wish her all the best in what ever she does.

I love the idea of having a shirt with a barn painted on it. The article was great and you have to be one talented lady. I always enjoy reading all the Home & Farm stories. I also really liked the idea Delores had of painting on the bricks from her parents’ home. How neat! I have bricks from my old grade school and hope to get a couple from the old church where I attended as a child–Promise City, Iowa. Don’t know how well I would do, but would be willing to give painting a try!

I used to paint on shirts and different things when my children were small. Also, I painted with oil on canvas and that was so relaxing. Not many things are fun any more since my daughter, her husband and 2 small sons were killed in a tornado in 2006. Knowing that they are waiting for me in Heaven keeps me going. Some day I will be with them again. Loved your article and shirt. God bless.

I have followed Donna Dewberry’s work for years thinking she is the best, but I have to say I think Mrs Webb has her topped. Now I have to see if I can find her web site so I can view more of her scenes, I love the chicken with wire in your Home & Farm issue about her work. I lokk forward to the H&F issues I recieve, it’s just like getting a fresh breeze of country air through the open window to enjoy. Thanks ~Julie

Ivene is not only an amazing artist, but she is an amazing lady with a big heart! She has been painting clothes for me since I was first born 20 years ago! She has painted baby onesies, shirts, tank tops, overalls, sweatshirts, capri pants, jackets, and denim shirts! You name it and she can paint it! I am very blessed to have an aunt like her! Now I am married and she painted a canvas painting for me and my husband that has our name on a mailbox to hang in our house and we have a set of her wisemen and people go crazy over them! I can’t say enough about how beautiful they are! We get so many compliments on all the things she makes, everybody just loves it! Now she is starting all over with onesies again for my precious little girl! She spoils her rotten with beautiful painted clothes! She is a fantastic artist not just because she is my aunt! She blows people out of the water with her talent!

Ivene’s work is not only beautiful but straight from her heart. Never has there been a more giving and caring person than Ivene. Thank you so much for sharing her and her work with so many people. So many beautiful gifts have been worn by our family members and friends. The article is great but only shows a small portion of what she has been gifted to do. I have worn things that people have wanted to buy off my back. At one craft show, she tried to get me to change into another outfit so a fellow could buy the dress i was wearing. She has a great sense of humor and I’m blessed to have such a wonderful sister.

    Love you Ivene,

I met “Cricket” Ivene Webb almost 20 years ago at a craft show at Bersheba Springs, she had some amazing pieces of which i loved them all. My first purchase was a denim jumper with a white picket fence around the bottom beautiful sun flowers and some beetles. As a matter of fact i wore it out and requested she paint me another one a few year back. i think i have a piece of just about everything she has painted. I love wearing her clothes because chances are you will not ever find someone else wearing the same thing. i always have many complimants each time i wear some of her art work. We have kept in touch over the years , i count it a Blessing to have her as a friend, she is a wonderful Christian Lady and her husband Jimmy is a fine fellow as well. Blessings, Peace, Love and Happiness to them would be my prayer.

I can’t wait for the Ivene “Webbsite” to be up and running. Have purchased hand-painted clothing items from her which are very beautifully done. One of my most precious possessions tho is a nativity set she created out of my nearly 100 year old Maw Maw’s old bedspread and flannel shirt fabric. The way she painted and adorned them are glorious and knowing what she used to make them keeps my dear Maw Maw close to my heart. Cricket is hopping with true Tennessee talent!

I have been friends with Ivene Webb for many years. I am thankful for having many painted clothes that she has painted. I have one of almost everthing she has done. They are just as pretty now as when I first got them. I also have the Wisemen and all the other seasonal paintings she has done. The clothes wash and iron real well and hold their color just like new.

She is a gifted artist with many talents and I am glad to be her friend. Her work is absolutely beautiful.

I am an owner of several of Crickets beautiful shirts. But I would still love to win one to add to my collection. She is a great artist, and truly gifted. She makes it all seem so easy. The best thing I can say about Cricket is that she is just as beautiful a person as the paintings she creates. I feel it an honor just to be a friend of such a tallented an honorable individual. She is so deserving of such a great article. I do love the Tennessee Home and Farm magazine. I can’t wait to receive ours in the mail, you stay informed about your own state. And find so many great things to do in your own area.

Ivene is truly a great artist but first a wonderful friend. I had the opportunity to live in
Chattanooga for seven years and Ivene and I became wonderful friends and I moved back to FL in 2002 and we remain friends and call each other often. I also took some of the painting classes and wise men classes with her help, would not attempt to do this by myself. I really miss her. TN, is a beautiful state loved it. A friend
like Ivene is one in a million.

My wife,Susan, and I celebrate our 39th wedding anniversary on the 15th of September and I will celebrate 63 years of life on the 28th of September. Noticing your print of the mail box and because I work for the Postal service, I’d like to place my name in the drawing in hopes of winning the shirt for my wife. Sure it would be after-the-fact but she would cherish it and wear it proudly. We will be in Pigeon Forge from Sept. 25 to Oct. 2nd. Maybe should we win, a special trip would be in the making to meet you. Your work is a real treasure of country scenes. We love them. Sincerely, John Matthews

I’m not one of those that seem to win everything they enter and I don’t expect to win this but I did want to give my two cents worth….do you have any idea how blessed you are? You are so talented. You just can’t beat what you use as your canvases or subjects. I’ve always lived in the country and my favorite thing to take pictures of when I get a chance to do any traveling is old barns. I’m afraid that by the time my grandchildren are grown there won’t be any left standing.

When I saw your picture of the shirt with the barn on it and the grass so green and beautiful i just had to visit your site. It looks simply beautiful.
