Last winter, students at Rickman Elementary School in Overton County planted a whopping 700 daffodils on the school’s campus, all while learning about the flowers.
The project was the brainchild of the school’s principal, Dr. Donnie Holman, and taught students all about daffodils. Through special announcements, enhancements to the regular curriculum and library outreach, students learned about the difference between perennials and annuals, the parts of a plant, and other aspects of plant life.
The program culminated in a school-wide daffodil plant day, where each student planted his or her own daffodil. In addition to learning about the life cycle of daffodils, students also learned valuable skills of planning ahead and the importance of taking care of something to make their community better.
