Farmers Feeding the Hungry
A Fayette County food bank is making strides against hunger with the help of local farmers.
A 2010 survey by the Mid-South Food Bank found that 83 percent of those served by the bank had to choose between buying food and paying utilities, and 32 percent had to choose between buying food and paying for a place to live. As a result, the Moscow Community Food Pantry created the Invest in Fayette County program.
The program encourages farmers to donate the proceeds of one or more acres of crops to help feed hungry families in the county. Proceeds from just one acre of farmland can help provide hundreds of meals to the 600 local families served by the Moscow Community Food Pantry.
