Jerome Hickman of Strawberry Plains doesn’t make it up to Cades Cove too often, but on an early October morning last year, he traveled the hour- and-a-half drive to watch the sunrise.

“I woke up at about 5 a.m. to see it rise at 6, but it actually didn’t come up until 7,” Hickman says. “I had to wait a little bit.”

The wait was worth it. Hickman snapped the photo of the Cades Cove Missionary Baptist Church in the valley with the sun hitting it just right, earning him the grand prize for the 2016 Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation Photo Contest.
“I saw one of the categories for this year was churches and I thought, ‘I have a pretty picture of a church. I’ll send it in and see what they think,’ ” Hickman says.

The judges at Journal Communications, the publisher of this magazine, thought it was more than pretty and chose Hickman’s photo out of hundreds of impressive entries, including several other great shots of the same church.
