Founded by Oak Ridge resident Lori McAlister, Tennessee Naturescapes in Clinton is a local nursery specializing in native plants. McAlister started the business when she noticed a need for more commercially available native plants, which provide multiple benefits to the environment. Because they are already adapted to Tennessee’s climate and soil, these important plants provide shelter and food sources such as pollen, nectar and seeds for native wildlife. They also require less water than nonnative plants, need fewer fertilizers and pesticides, and help promote biodiversity and stewardship of our natural heritage.

Since 2009, Tennessee Naturescapes has provided more than 300 species of native wildflowers, grasses, shrubs, vines and trees to customers across the state. All their plants are propagated from locally sourced and legally harvested seeds and parent material, so they are perfectly suited for growing in Tennessee.

The nursery not only serves the East Tennessee community with in-person sales but also provides mail-order options for customers anywhere east of the Mississippi River. A few plants they recommend growing this spring include spring beauty (Claytonia virginica), Dutchman’s breeches (Dicentra cucullaria), dwarf crested iris (Iris cristata), Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica) and Indian pink (Spigelia marilandica), all of which can be purchased on their website.
