Road signs, license plates and other memorabilia adorn the walls of the Junkyard Dog Steakhouse in Hohenwald. The eclectic décor reflects the restaurant’s name – but the food definitely doesn’t, as its guests savor high-quality American cuisine in a cozy atmosphere.

Between them, owners Mandy and Danny Weigel had about 50 years of culinary experience when they opened the Junkyard Dog in 2006.

“We’d both been in the restaurant business since our 20s, and knew this was what we wanted to do,” Mandy says.

The Weigels’ friendly personalities create a down-home atmosphere that’s a perfect gathering place for all.

“We try to keep it light and fun,” Mandy says. “Cattle ranchers arrive in their spurs and muddy boots, and the mayor is right behind them in a suit and tie. Everyone’s welcome to come on in.”

She says the restaurant’s location attracts a range of customers. “In the little communities around us, there’s not a lot to choose from without driving all the way to Jackson or Cool Springs,” she says.

While some diners come from afar, they often meet friends at the Junkyard Dog – on purpose or by accident. “We’re kind of in the middle of nowhere,” she says, “but a lot of times it seems like everybody knows everybody in here.”

For private parties or rehearsal dinners, there’s a 40-seat banquet room next door, aptly called the Garage. “It’s an extension of the building, and the atmosphere is a little more elegant,” Mandy says.

While the main dining room’s vibe is comfortable and homey, it’s the food that draws guests to the Junkyard Dog.

“We make a really good variety of all-American fare – steak, seafood, pasta, salad, sandwiches and soup,” Mandy says. The Weigels emphasize quality and make their own sauces and salad dressings in-house. “We’re big on freshness. We have our own recipes and buy high-quality steak – the best meat we can get.”

And customers notice. The grilled rib-eye steak is the Junkyard Dog’s most popular menu item, according to Mandy. “We do a lot of burgers, too,” she adds. Something is always sizzling on the grill, whether it’s beef, chicken or seafood. “We take a lot of pride in our food.”

A meal at the Junkyard Dog fits perfectly into a day of exploring the creeks, waterfalls and rolling hills of the surrounding area.

“There are lots of opportunities for canoeing,” Mandy says, “and our beautiful low-traffic highways are a great place to ride a bike or a motorcycle.”
