Civil War Book

A singer, songwriter, actor and farmer, longtime Farm Bureau member Rick Revel of Henry County can now add author to that list of accomplishments. His new novel, In the Hills of Tennessee, is set in Stewart County during the Civil War. A work of historical fiction, the book tells the story of Jack Hinson, who is farming 1,200 acres with his wife and 10 children when the Civil War comes to his doorstep in 1862. Members of the federal army harass the family and destroy their property. When two of his sons are murdered by a federal cavalry patrol, Hinson swears vengeance.

The book is based on a biography of the real-life Hinson by Tom McKenney, a friend of Revel’s who encouraged him to create the fictional version of the story.

“All the facts and events and characters are true,” Revel says. “Just the dialogue is the fictional part. It gives Jack a voice.”

Authenticity is important to Revel. “Although this book is a work of historical fiction, I am trying to keep the historic fact intact,” he says. In addition to McKenney’s book, Revel cites 26 sources on his bibliography. He also has 40-years of experience as Civil War historian, writer, preservationist and reenactor.

When I was in school, the only subject I ever failed was 1/2 year of history. I’ve always said, it was bacause I had a problem with numbers and couldn’t remember when the war of 1812 was. Now I see where we need to keep history alive because so many people want to hide of change the facts. Cotton
