Tennessee Tomatoes May Come Early This Year

Heirloom Tomatoes

As Pettus Read says, all winter we have been thinking about that wonderful homegrown tomato. To ‘mater lovers, it can be excruciating waiting to plant tomatoes after the final frost, watering, weeding and checking every day to see if that first tiny green tomato has appeared on the vine. This year, they may be in luck.

According to WPLN, this mild winter has jump started tomato season. Farmers markets are preparing for tomatoes as early as June 1, and both home gardeners and some larger regional tomato growers are already transplanting sprouts grown from seeds.

We don’t want to get your hopes up since it’s barely April (though this 85-degree weather feels like mid June), but in preparation for early tomatoes, here’s Pettus’ famous tomato sandwich ‘mater samminch video, along with a few tomato recipes to get you ready for summer. After all, tomatoes from Florida are already popping up at local grocery stores.

I had some tomatoes from a county north of Knoxville when I was there one summer. They were fabulous tomatoes. Granger County? Not sure.
