Did you know that suicide among farmers is nearly 1.5 times higher than the national average? Farmers face an extreme amount of stress every single day, whether it be financial issues or weather obstacles. Though mental health complications affect 20% of the population, many do not seek help due to stigma and privacy concerns.

For farmers, warning signs include:

  • A farming accident that could be a suicide attempt or result in an injury, leading to more stress
  • Changes in sleeping or eating patterns
  • Increased irritability and criticism
  • Withdrawal from family, friends or routines that used to be pleasurable
  • Making final arrangements or giving away possessions of known importance

The Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network offers further information and resources. If you are concerned about yourself or someone you know, visit tspn.org/farmers, call (800) 273-TALK (8255) or text “TN” to 741741 to be connected with a trained counselor.
