6 Strawberry-Picking Tips From a Tennessee Farmer
Are you planning on strawberry picking at a local patch this spring? Get a few useful tips before you go from farmer Brandon Whitt of Batey Farms in Murfreesboro.
1. Dress appropriately.
Picking is done outside and subject to Mother Nature’s elements, so check the weather before and wear comfortable clothes.

2. Scan the plants.
When picking, be sure to scan each plant by gently parting the leaves from side to side and looking for the little red gems hidden underneath the foliage.
3. Check for ripeness.
Before just grabbing and plucking a berry, gently turn it and make sure it is fully red and has a firm texture all the way around.

4. Don’t pick the flowers.
Resist the temptation to pick the pretty white blooms because those will be more berries in just a few short days.
5. Follow the farmer’s instructions.
Remember that you are supporting a local family farm, so please pay for your berries before eating. Pay close attention to the farmers’ picking directions each day, as they will try to put you in the best spot.
